MATTHEW BOURNE’S
‘SLEEPING BEAUTY’

BECOMES MOST SUCCESSFUL PRODUCTION
IN THE COMPANY’S HISTORY

NEW ADVENTURES DELIGHTED TO ANNOUNCE
SEVEN CITY USA TOUR
and
CHRISTMAS TV BROADCAST
and DVD RELEASE

New Adventures are delighted to announce that Matthew Bourne’s SLEEPING BEAUTY will tour the United States from September this year, playing two week seasons in Cleveland (Playhouse Square), New York (City Center) and Los Angeles (Ahmanson Theatre) as well as a week long engagement at the prestigious Kennedy Center in Washington DC. Opening at the Civic Center in Des Moines on 27 September, the three month tour will also travel to Schenectady (Proctors) and Charlotte (Blumenthal Performing Arts). The U.S. tour follows the current record-breaking UK tour of the show, which also visits The Ravenna Festival in Italy (29 May – 2 June) and our fifth visit to The Chekhov International Festival in Moscow (11 -16 June). Full tour schedules below.

We are also thrilled to announce that Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty, with it’s original cast, will be captured on film at the Bristol Hippodrome next month, for later broadcast on UK and International TV over the Christmas period and a subsequent DVD release (Full details to follow). The film will be Directed by Ross MacGibbon, who has collaborated many times with Matthew Bourne on previous award-winning New Adventures films, including the recent Imagine Documentary, “A Beauty Is Born”

Matthew Bourne’s SLEEPING BEAUTY had it’s London premiere in December 2012 with a complete sell-out Christmas season at Sadler’s Wells. During its eight week run it ran for 64 performances and played to full capacity audiences where over 97,000 people saw the show. This makes it the fastest selling and most successful show in the theatre’s history and the most successful production so far produced by New Adventures.

Of those 97,000 patrons, over 46% were first time attendees to Sadler’s Wells. Over 5,429 family tickets were sold and 899 tickets were sold to school groups.

The first leg of the British tour has also proved equally successful, breaking box office records with additional performances added in Birmingham and Leicester. Already seen by an audience of over 250,000, the production begins the second leg of its UK tour at Newcastle Theatre Royal on 16 April 2013.

Last month, the show won the Manchester Theatre Award (formally the Manchester Evening News Award) for Best Dance production for a record 6th time. The production was also recently nominated for an Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance for Lez Brotherston’s Set and Costume Designs.

MATTHEW BOURNE SAID TODAY
“Sleeping Beauty was created as the centre piece of a year long celebration of 25 years of my company, and its quality and popularity is a testament to everyone who makes New Adventures what it is today. I’m grateful to our touring venues and audiences who have embraced this piece like no other, making it our most successful production yet. As New Adventures enters it’s next 25 years, I couldn’t be more thrilled to be returning to the USA, where the company has enjoyed particular success over the last two decades, with a production and a company of which I am so proud”

In Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty, the traditional tale of good vs. evil and rebirth is turned upside-down, creating a supernatural love story, across the decades, that even the passage of time itself cannot hinder. Perrault’s fairy tale about a young girl cursed to sleep for one hundred years was turned into a legendary ballet by Tchaikovsky and choreographer Marius Petipa in 1890. Bourne takes this date as his starting point, setting the christening of Aurora, the story’s heroine, in the year of the ballet’s first performance at the height of the fin de siècle period when fairies, vampires and decadent opulence fed the gothic imagination. As Aurora grows into a young woman in the more rigid, uptight Edwardian era, a mythical golden age of long summer afternoons, croquet on the lawn and new dance crazes. Years later, awakening from her century long slumber, Aurora finds herself in the modern day, a world more mysterious and wonderful than any fairy story.

With Sleeping Beauty, Bourne works again with three of his regular collaborators and New Adventures Associate Artists, the Tony and Olivier Award-winning designers Lez Brotherston (Set and Costumes), Paule Constable (Lighting) and Paul Groothuis l(Sound Design).
