SWANS IN 3D!
Posted on Tuesday 12 April 2011
On Friday 8th April, Swan Lake was captured in glorious 3D and HD for broadcast in June on the SKY 3D channel.
For those of you without a 3D TV (and that's most people at the moment I guess?) it will also be broadcast in the beautiful HD, 2D version. Watch this space also for Cinema screenings in 3D and of course a DVD release.
The cast that performed for this special recording featured
Richard Winsor as The Swan/Stranger
Dominic North as The Prince
Nina Goldman as The Queen
Madelaine Brennan as The Girlfriend
Steve Kirkham as The Private secretary
and 13 year old Joseph Vaughan as The Young Prince
Matthew Bourne felt it essential for the film to get a genuine youngster to play the young Dominic North, and as you will see from the picture on the right, we found a striking resemblance in young Joseph Vaughan from Portsmouth. Joe did a wonderful job after just one days rehearsal, and is extremely effective in the film. A future swan?
Steve Kirkham went into the New Adventures history books by becoming the only dancer to appear in both the 1996 and the 2011 recordings. He was a Cygnet in 1996 and The Private Secretary in 2011. Also look out for a brief cameo from company Associate Director, Etta Murfitt in the Soho scene!

PRESS RELEASE
Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake to be broadcast in 3D
RX: 8th April, 2011
TX: June 2011
Produced by Leopard Films for Sky 3D and Sky Arts
This summer will see Matthew Bourne’s award-winning production of Swan Lake come to television screens for the first time in 3D, exclusively on Sky 3D.
Thrilling, audacious and totally original, Matthew Bourne's production transforms one of ballet's best -loved stories into a stylish, witty, poignant, contemporary tale with extravagant, award-winning designs by Lez Brotherston. Perhaps best-known for replacing the traditional female corps de ballet with a menacing male ensemble, Matthew Bourne blends dance, style, humour, spectacle, character comedy and mime to create a provocative and powerful Swan Lake for our times.
Since its 9th November 1995 world premiere at Sadler’s Wells, Matthew Bourne’s breathtaking and sexy version of Swan Lake has become the longest running ballet in the London’s West End and on Broadway. It has enjoyed four successful tours in the UK and continues to thrill audiences throughout the world.
Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake has collected over thirty international theatre awards, including three Tony’s for the Broadway production and has been widely acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic as a landmark production on the international stage.
Returning exclusively for Sky 3D to Sadler’s Wells, and in association with Arts Council England, this unique production will be filmed with the most up-to-date 3D technology, bringing this legendary production to life in a way that has never been seen before on UK television. It will also be broadcast in 2D on Sky Arts.
‘Matthew Bourne’s production has fast become one of the most iconic productions of this ballet and we’re delighted to be able to broadcast it in 3D,’ comments John Cassy, Director of 3D. ‘Performance is one of the most exciting genres for 3D – and the depth of feel that 3D is able to offer to dance productions on screen is truly thrilling. It sounds clichéd, but it really does feel as if you’re there.’
The production will be filmed live, before an audience on 8th April at Sadler’s Wells.
