FORTNUM AND MASON CELEBRATES SWAN LAKE
Posted on Friday 27 November 2009
"The festive lights in Regent and Oxford Streets are better than usual, there’s a real sense of love-and-peace hippie revivalism with the illuminated inflatables and kitsch plastic Christmas trees in Carnaby Street, while the window display at Fortnum and Mason, based on Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake, is wickedly subversive. In a series of tableaux the hero resembles the Prince of Wales, his girlfriend looks like Diana, Princess of Wales, and there is little doubt as one follows the narrative told in rhyming couplets inscribed on the windows that the heir to the throne is being presented as an unhappy, closeted homosexual. One wonders if Fortnum and Mason has any interest in retaining its Royal Warrants"
